Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What exactly is the Writing & Learning Center?
A: The Writing & Learning Center is a place for students to learn to become better writers and more productive students. Tutors are available to assist you with all stages of the writing process and with a variety of assignments. It is also the home of our campus Language Lab, a place where ESOL and students who are enrolled in Spanish classes can come to study or complete their course lab hours.
Q: To see a tutor, do I need to have an appointment?
A: Yes. We work on an appointment basis, so having one is required especially during peak periods of the semester (mid-terms, finals). Appointments can be made by calling 817-515-1069 or coming in to request one.
Q: What should I bring to a tutoring session?
A: Since appointments are 30 minutes, you should have an idea of what you’d like to discuss, the original directions of the assignment, a typed copy of your assignment, a saved version, and other related materials. Something to write with would be nice, too!
Q: How exactly does a tutoring session work?
A: You’ll work one-on-one with a tutor at one of the center’s computer stations or in our study room. Again, since appointments last only 30 minutes please come in with a specific idea of what you’d like to work on. Please note, if you have questions about the assignment itself (directions, what sources to include, etc.), your instructor is the best person to ask!
Q: Is tutoring the only service the center provides?
A: No! Our center has computer stations available for you to work on your writing assignments as well as other course-related materials. A study room—featuring a flat screen monitor, DVD/VHS players, and computer hookups—is located in the Center and is available as an independent study area and can be reserved for group projects. Headphones are also available upon request at the front desk. The center is also home to a reading resource room, where students can use both software and reading aids to improve their reading skills.
